Learning Styles

Humans are programmed to learn. Our brains are built to gather and assimilate information but we are all different and learn in different ways!  Schools need to find the best ways to unlock the learning of each individual so that they can reach their potential. This is where our work on Learning Styles and Personality fits in.

Each year the children do a simple test that shows their Personality Type and preferred Learning Style. It is based on the famous Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator Test but instead of 16 personality types it gives us four basic types, Guardian, Idealist, Artisan and Rational. Just for fun we have linked these to characters from Winnie the Pooh and the children enjoy finding out about the different ways they can learn.

The tests aren’t supposed to pigeonhole people or narrow their opportunities; quite the reverse. As they say knowledge is power and we find that doing the test gives staff and children an accessible way into talking about learning and learning to learn. In fact we would say that this work has revolutionised the learning at The Chandler and made children and adults much more aware of the different ways of learning and definitely broadened and focused what we do in class. Teachers are more aware of the need to provide for the full range of children and children are more able to appreciate the problems and possibilities of learning to learn!
