Chandler College

The College was our new curriculum initiative last year and greatly applauded by Ofsted. It enables specific skills based learning for our children and opportunities for specialization for our staff. It is clear that our children need a range of life skills to prepare them for the challenges of adulthood and The College provides a focused vehicle to deliver some of these. It is very different from Fun Friday in that it is more about learning skills and less about having fun!

The College enables us to...

  • initiate more focused skills based learning
  • provide opportunities for staff to specialize
  • facilitate new skills to be taught especially ‘life skills’
  • allow learning over an extended period to be deeper and slower
  • engage pupils more in their learning
  • provide a vehicle to let children develop and extend individual talents and gifts
  • highlight our commitment to a broad curriculum and emphasis on the whole child

At the start of each half term three consecutive Fridays will be devoted to this skills based specialist learning. There are four skills in each year group ensuring coverage and progression. The children complete the skills module over the three days to gain a Diploma in that skill. There are 16 college groups across the school. Four skill sets in each year, making the group size approximately 21. These groups stay the same and rotate over the year so children will experience each skill. 2009 - 2010  the College provided the following skills…
